Welcome to the first issue of FinWise Exchange, a platform where we shine a spotlight on Africa’s financial centres, market developments and innovations through the insights and experience of leading industry professionals.
The magazine debuts at the FinWise 2nd Annual Investment Summit on 22 July 2025 in Mauritius, where speakers from Port Louis, Mumbai and Geneva will share strategies under the theme “In the Pursuit of Growth”. This launch comes at a time when wealth is rising across Africa and mobile finance is opening doors for our fast-growing, youthful population, yet reliable, practitioner-led commentary remains hard to find in some countries. FinWise Exchange was created to fill that gap – providing a unified, independent platform where fund managers, institutional investors and financial professionals across Africa can share insights, build trust across borders and enhance capital flows.
My travels over the past 15 years across Africa revealed a persistent paradox: our continent holds a wealth of financial talent and innovative ideas, yet information asymmetry keeps many markets and opportunities apart. Too often, African institutions default to Europe or North America even when equally strong solutions exist in our Motherland.
At the same time, entrepreneurs from Lusaka to Nairobi and beyond were breaking new ground—launching low-cost investing platforms, running home-grown funds with global reach, and striking deals that link our markets. Their success confirms that Africa has the talent and offerings; what’s missing is visibility and a stronger South-South pipeline. We see this lack of visibility and connectivity as the challenge that FinWise seeks to address.
FinWise Exchange is part of the answer. It builds on national efforts already under way, and does so with two non-negotiables: a pan-African lens and complete independence. Our goal is simple: being the voice of African financial markets, and in doing so, help its markets grow together.
FinWise stands on two pillars: independence and inclusivity. From the outset we set out to publish a magazine where all voices—large or small, established or emerging—meet on equal terms. Every issue will therefore blend three vantage-points. First, the on-the-ground knowledge of African service providers and entrepreneurs who live the realities of our markets. Second, the hard-won experience of home-grown champions operating at scale across the continent. And third, carefully chosen global perspectives that add context and best practice without drowning out local nuance. By curating this mix, we aim to give readers a rounded, practitioner-led view of “what works”. This first edition stays true to that promise with each contributor offering a fresh angle on growth, risk and opportunity in African finance, with a special focus on Botswana.
Looking ahead, our ambition is to take FinWise to more African cities, to welcome an even wider range of contributors and to work closely with government and business partners. By sharing knowledge across borders, we aim to broaden financial inclusion and empower young Africans to grow into lifelong investors.
Bringing FinWise Exchange to life has been a team effort from day one. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all our contributors and our team. A special thank you to our sponsors – you believed in this project from the outset. Together, we have created more than just a publication; we have built a community.
And to you, our readers: welcome to FinWise Exchange, a forum where Africa’s financial future is shaped by its own innovators. Enjoy the issue—let’s build prosperity together.
